Music Time

Music

Music has always been one of the ways I come back to myself.

A familiar melody can soften the edges of a difficult day, steady the mind, or gently lift the mood when everything feels heavy. Sometimes it’s something I listen to quietly in the background; other times it’s a song that carries me through a moment and reminds me I’m not alone in how I feel.

Music meets us where we are. It doesn’t ask for effort or explanation, it simply offers rhythm, emotion, and a sense of connection. Whether it’s a piece that brings calm, a song that helps release emotion, or something that quietly energises and restores, music has a way of supporting us when words fall short.

On this page, you’ll find music and playlists I return to when I need comfort, clarity, or a gentle lift. They’re shared as companions rather than prescriptions, something to have playing while you rest, write, walk, or simply breathe.

Take what resonates. Let it support you in its own quiet way.

How To Use Music As A Healing Tool

Think of music as your personal healer, always ready to lend an ear, uplift your spirits, or soothe your mind. You don't need a therapist to harness the power of music; you just need your favourite tunes and a willingness to open your heart.

First, let's talk about creating the perfect playlist. This isn't just any playlist; it's your personal therapeutic soundtrack. Start by picking songs that resonate with your current mood. Feeling blue? Gentle, calming music can be a comforting companion. Need a boost? Upbeat, lively tracks can lift your spirits. The key is to connect with the music emotionally.

But there's more to music therapy than just listening. Singing along can be incredibly cathartic. Don't worry about hitting the right notes; just focus on expressing yourself. Singing releases endorphins, those feel-good brain chemicals, making it a great way to boost your mood.

Ever tried moving to the beat? Whether it's a gentle sway or a full-on dance party in your living room, moving to music can be a great way to release tension and improve your mood. It's not about the right moves; it's about how the music makes you feel in your body.

Here's another idea: try your hand at playing an instrument. Even if you're a beginner, learning simple tunes can be incredibly rewarding and therapeutic. Instruments like the ukulele, keyboard, or even percussion instruments like drums or handpan are great for starters.

Don't forget the power of nature sounds blended with music. Sounds of the ocean, rainforest, or gentle rain mixed with soft melodies can transport you to a place of peace and relaxation. It's like a mini-vacation for your mind and soul.

Mindfulness and music are a match made in heaven. Try listening to a piece of music mindfully - focus on each note, the different instruments, and the emotions it evokes. This practice can help you stay present and find peace in the moment.
Writing your own songs or lyrics, even if it's just a few lines, can be a great way to process your thoughts and feelings. It's like keeping a journal, but with a melody.

Lastly, remember that music therapy is personal. What works for one person might not work for another. Experiment with different genres, activities, and routines to find what resonates with you.
