Guided Meditation

People You Haven’t Met Yet

A meditation for making friends as an adult, when connection has stopped happening by itself.

There are times in life when friendship happens almost automatically. At school, through work, through your children, through the communities you belong to. You keep finding yourself around the same people, and slowly, without really noticing, some of them become friends.

Then life changes. People move, relationships end, children grow up, interests shift. Sometimes we outgrow places that once felt like home. And suddenly it doesn’t happen so easily any more. You might have people around you and still find yourself wanting someone you can really talk to.

This isn’t here to teach you how to make friends, and it won’t turn friendship into another thing to work at. It’s here to soften some of the fear around connection, and to help you feel a little more open to the people you haven’t met yet.

This is a longer one, around 29 minutes, so give yourself the time. Settle somewhere comfortable, let your hands rest, and press play. For the next half hour there’s nobody you need to impress and nothing you need to say.

One gentle note: meditation works best as a regular practice, not a one-off. A few minutes most days will do far more than an occasional longer session, so if it helps, let this become a small part of your daily rhythm.

If you’d like a next step

Building the habit is the hard part. The 21-Day Meditation Course gives you a short guided practice for each day of three weeks, so sitting down to it stops being a decision you have to make every morning.

What You’ll Experience

Not finding friends. Making room for them.

Most advice about adult friendship is a set of instructions: join things, put yourself out there, say yes more. The instructions are usually right and almost never the problem. What stops us is the worry underneath, that everyone already has their circle, that we might not be very good at this any more. This meditation works on that instead.

Take the Pressure Off

You don’t need to find your person today. Small openings are enough.

Soften the Fear

Meet the what-ifs about rejection without having to argue them away.

Arrive as Yourself

Practise turning up somewhere without performing or proving anything.

Choose Too

Remember that friendship isn’t only about whether somebody picks you.

Gentle Reflection

After listening, you might like to sit with these questions.

No need to answer them all. Pick the one that lands, and be gentle with whatever comes up.

1. Who is already in my life that I’d like to know a little better?

2. What have I talked myself out of suggesting, and what stopped me?

3. Who do I leave feeling more like myself rather than less?

When this meditation may help

Come back whenever the door feels shut.

A quiet season isn’t necessarily a permanent one. Sometimes we find ourselves between versions of a life, after some connections have fallen away and before the new ones have had time to grow. This is company for that stretch.

After a move or a separation

The people who used to surround you aren’t there any more.

Before walking in somewhere alone

A class, a group, a gathering, and you’d rather not turn round at the door.

When you’ve been let down

You reached out before and it wasn’t returned, and it’s made you careful.

When you have people, but nobody to call

Your life is full and you still want someone who knows who you are now.

Learning to Belong to the Life You Have
Healing isn’t always about getting the old life back. Sometimes this one becomes home.

Sometimes it’s the start of one. If today’s meditation has left you feeling more open or curious, you might enjoy Book Quote Therapy, my literary companion site where books, poems, quotations and Literary Prescriptions are gathered for different seasons of life.

For this meditation, I’d point you towards these Literary Prescriptions:

Loneliness : for the wanting, said better than most of us manage.

Change : for the seasons when the people around you shift.

Comfort : for the quieter stretches in between.

Company for the early weeks, from people who have written it down before you.
