Guided Meditation
Somewhere Soft to Land
A gentle meditation for the first days and weeks after a breakup, when getting through the day is enough to be going on with.
Heartbreak makes even the most ordinary parts of life feel difficult. Eating. Sleeping. Concentrating. Getting through a day without thinking about what happened. Your mind keeps returning to the same conversations and the same questions, while another part of you is simply exhausted by all of it.
This one is for that very early stage after a breakup, a separation or a divorce, when you don’t need anyone telling you to move on, let go, or look forward to your wonderful new life. You just need somewhere soft to land for a little while.
There’s nothing to work out here. You won’t be asked to stop loving someone, to find meaning in what happened, or to imagine a new relationship. Instead we’ll make the world smaller for a while: this breath, this moment, this day.
Settle somewhere comfortable, and press play when you’re ready. Sometimes healing after a breakup starts with something far simpler than moving on. Sometimes it starts with taking care of yourself while your heart catches up with everything that has changed.
Listen to the meditation
One gentle note: meditation works best as a regular practice, not a one-off. A few minutes most days will do far more than an occasional longer session, so if it helps, let this become a small part of your daily rhythm.
If you’d like a next step
The Inner Peace Toolkit gathers two guided meditations, a journal, an affirmations ebook and some printables, for the days when one practice isn’t quite enough on its own.
What You’ll Experience
Nothing to fix. Somewhere to rest.
Most heartbreak advice arrives too early. It wants you further along than you are, and being told to look forward when you can barely get through the afternoon only makes you feel you’re doing it wrong. This asks nothing of you. It makes the world smaller for a few minutes so there’s less of it to carry.
Somewhere to Land
A few minutes where nothing is being asked of you and nothing needs deciding.
Quieten the Replaying
Gentle company for a mind that keeps returning to the same conversations.
This Breath, This Day
Bring it down to something small enough to manage right now.
Be Looked After
Take care of yourself while your heart catches up with what has changed.
Gentle Reflection
After listening, you might like to sit with these questions.
No need to answer them all. Pick the one that lands, and be gentle with whatever comes up.
1. What would help me get through the next hour? Only the next hour.
2. What have I managed today that I haven’t given myself any credit for?
3. Who could I tell that I’m not doing very well, if I wanted to?
If you’d like somewhere to write them down, Gentle Practices gives you a page to write on, and keeps what you write on your own device.
Questions people ask
Is it too soon after the breakup to listen?
No. This was made for the first days and weeks, when getting through the day is enough. Nothing in it asks you to move on, let go, or feel differently than you do.
Will this help me get over someone?
Not directly, and it doesn’t try. It gives you somewhere to rest while your heart catches up with what has changed, which is a different thing and often more useful early on.
What if I cry while listening?
That’s allowed and fairly common. You don’t need to hold anything together, and stopping partway through is fine.
Continue the Reflection
Sometimes a meditation isn’t the end of the conversation.
From The Library
Grieving Someone Who Is Still Alive: The Loss No One Sees
On mourning a person who hasn’t died, and why that grief goes unrecognised.
Sometimes it’s the start of one. If today’s meditation has left you feeling more open or curious, you might enjoy Book Quote Therapy, my literary companion site where books, poems, quotations and Literary Prescriptions are gathered for different seasons of life.
For this meditation, I’d point you towards these Literary Prescriptions:
Heartbreak : for words that don’t rush you.
Loss : for the size of what has gone.
Letting Go : for whenever you’re ready, and not before.
Company for the early weeks, from people who have written it down before you.
