Guided Meditation
You Don’t Have to Explain Yourself Here
A gentle meditation for when you feel misunderstood, overlooked or alone in your experience.
Perhaps people see what you do, what you give, or the person you’ve learned to be, and somehow miss the person underneath. Perhaps you’ve tried to explain how you feel and walked away feeling less understood than before.
This one is often for the people who do most of the noticing. You listen, you remember what matters to others, you make room for their feelings. And somewhere underneath there’s a quiet question about whether anyone thinks to do the same for you.
We’re not going to solve that here. For these few minutes you don’t have to make yourself understood by anyone, and you don’t have to earn the right to feel what you feel. You can rest from the effort of it.
There are longer pauses in this one than you may be used to, and the silences are deliberate. They give you room to stay with your own experience rather than follow my voice. Find somewhere comfortable, and press play when you’re ready.
Listen to the meditation
One gentle note: meditation works best as a regular practice, not a one-off. A few minutes most days will do far more than an occasional longer session, so if it helps, let this become a small part of your daily rhythm.
If you’d like a next step
Building the habit is the hard part. The 21-Day Meditation Course gives you a short guided practice for each day of three weeks, so sitting down to it stops being a decision you have to make every morning.
What You’ll Experience
A short rest from the work of being understood.
Explaining yourself takes more out of you than people realise, and so does the quiet accounting of who notices and who doesn’t. This asks nothing of you. There’s no one here to convince and nothing you need to make clear.
Put Down the Explaining
A few minutes where you don’t have to make anyone understand you.
Let It Be Real
No talking yourself out of it, and no comparing it with what other people carry.
Come Back to Yourself
A hand over your heart, your own breath, and the weight of you resting where you are.
Stay With Your Own Side
You can keep your own company when somebody else hasn’t understood you.
Gentle Reflection
After listening, you might like to sit with these questions.
No need to answer them all. Pick the one that lands, and be gentle with whatever comes up.
1. What part of me have I stopped expecting anyone to notice?
2. Who do I do the noticing for, and who does it for me?
3. What would I want someone to understand, if I knew they’d listen properly?
If you’d like somewhere to write them down, Gentle Practices gives you a page to write on, and keeps what you write on your own device.
Questions people ask
What does it mean to feel unseen?
It’s the sense that people know what you do or what you give, but not who you actually are underneath that. You can be surrounded by people and still feel it. It often shows up in the people who do most of the noticing for everyone else.
Will this meditation make me feel understood?
No, and it isn’t trying to. It gives you a short space where being understood isn’t the task, so you can stop working at it for a few minutes and let your own experience be what it is.
Why are the pauses so long?
They’re deliberate. If I talk the whole way through, you end up following my voice instead of noticing what’s actually there. The longer gaps give you room. They can feel odd the first time, and that usually settles.

Sometimes a meditation isn’t the end of the conversation.

Sometimes it’s the start of one. If today’s meditation has stayed with you, you might find something in Book Quote Therapy, my literary companion site where books, poems, quotations and Literary Prescriptions are gathered for different seasons of life.
For this meditation, I’d point you towards these Literary Prescriptions:
Loneliness : for feeling alone in it, even among people.
People Pleasing : for when you’ve been doing all the noticing.
Self Compassion : for taking your own side.
All gentle companions for the days you feel unseen.
